Skin Concern

Dry & dehydrated skin

Tight an hour after you moisturise. Dull no matter what you use. A cream that felt rich going on and did nothing by lunchtime. There is a reason richer creams have not fixed it, and it is not that you have not found the right one yet.

Melanie White, Master Medical Esthetician at The Skincare Boutique

Dry and dehydrated are not the same thing, and they need opposite treatment.

Dry skin lacks oil. It is a skin type, usually lifelong, and it tends to feel rough and look flaky rather than tight. It needs lipids: richer textures, oils, ceramides.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. It is a condition rather than a type, it comes and goes, and it can happen to anyone including oily skin. It feels tight, looks dull, and shows fine lines that were not there last month.

Almost everyone who tells me their skin is dry is actually dehydrated. Which is why the rich cream did not work. Sealing dehydrated skin with a heavy occlusive traps the problem underneath rather than fixing it.

Tight, quickly

Skin feels drawn within an hour of moisturising, particularly after cleansing.

Dull, not rough

Skin looks flat and grey rather than flaky. Light does not bounce off it the way it used to.

Fine lines that come and go

Crepiness under the eyes and across the cheeks that looks worse some days than others. That variability is the tell.

Oily and tight together

Shine by midday on skin that still feels parched. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil to compensate.

Makeup that separates

Foundation clinging, patching, or sitting in texture by the afternoon.

Products that sting slightly

Mild stinging on application usually means the barrier is compromised alongside the dehydration.

Why it happens

The barrier is leaking. Skin loses water constantly through the surface. An intact barrier slows that to a trickle. A compromised one lets it pour, and no amount of cream applied on top compensates for water leaving from underneath.

Over-cleansing and over-exfoliating. The most common cause I see. Foaming cleansers, daily acids, scrubs. Each one strips a little of what holds water in.

Southern California. Low humidity, sun, air conditioning, and salt water all pull moisture out. Skin that was fine elsewhere often becomes dehydrated within months of moving here.

Hormones. Falling oestrogen reduces the substances that hold water in skin, which is why dehydration so often arrives alongside other hormonal changes.

If your skin also stings and flushes, dehydration is likely one part of a broader barrier problem. Sensitive and reactive skin covers that.

A rich cream over dehydrated skin does not fix dehydration. It seals it in.

How I treat it

Water in, then hold it there

  • Humectants onto damp skinHyaluronic acid and glycerin pull water in, but only if there is water present. Applied to bone-dry skin in a dry room they can draw moisture out instead.
  • Then seal, in that orderLipids go on top to stop what you have just added from evaporating. Sequence matters more than product cost here.
  • Repair the barrierCeramides and fatty acids, so skin stops losing water in the first place. This is the part that makes the result last.
  • Gentle exfoliation onlyDehydrated skin still needs the dead surface cleared so product can get in. Enzymes or oil dermaplaning, not acids.
  • Strip the routine backUsually the fastest improvement comes from removing three products rather than adding one.
  • SPF, alwaysSun damage degrades the structures that hold water. Protection is part of the treatment, not an afterthought.
Treatments

What actually rehydrates

Golden Hour HydraGlow

60 min · $225. The treatment built for exactly this. Oil dermaplaning clears the surface, then layered hydration goes into skin that can finally absorb it. This is the one I book for dehydration.

Book Golden Hour

Vitality & Renew

50 min · $195. Enzyme exfoliation and renewal when dullness and congestion are sitting alongside the dehydration. Gentler than an acid peel on a compromised barrier.

Book Vitality & Renew

Tighten & Glow RF

60 min · $265. Once hydration is restored, radiofrequency addresses the crepiness that dehydration was exaggerating. Order matters, so this comes second.

Book Tighten & Glow

The Icon

Melanie White at home with her Organiglo skincare ritual

At home

Dehydration is fixed daily, not monthly. A facial gives you a reset and a visible result that week, but what you do every morning and evening is what keeps it.

The Rituals bundle my Organiglo routines in the order above, which removes the guesswork about layering. That sequence is most of what people get wrong.

If you would rather have thirty days of structure with daily guidance from me, that is The Boutique Glow Method. And if you just want someone to look at what you already own and tell you what is causing this, book The Glow Edit.

Persistent dryness with itching, scaling, or patches that will not settle can be eczema or another dermatological condition rather than simple dehydration. I am an esthetician, not a physician. If what you are describing sounds like it needs a diagnosis, I will say so rather than treat around it.

Next step

Start with Golden Hour

Sixty minutes of oil dermaplaning and layered hydration. It is the treatment I built for this concern, and the result is visible the same day. If you would rather sort your routine first, book The Glow Edit instead.
