How to Take Care of Your Skin and Yourself During the Holidays

The holiday season is beautiful — and exhausting. Stress, disrupted sleep, travel, rich food, and emotional weight all take a toll on your skin and your wellbeing. Here’s how to protect both.

In more than twenty years as a Master Medical Esthetician, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern: clients who come in after the holidays often look more tired than they did going in. Not because they didn’t enjoy themselves — but because they stopped taking care of themselves. The routine went out the window, the stress went up, and the skin paid for it.

The good news is that a little intention goes a long way. You don’t have to choose between enjoying the season and taking care of yourself. Here’s how to do both.

1. Protect your skin barrier from holiday stressors

Elevated cortisol — the stress hormone — is one of the biggest drivers of holiday skin issues: breakouts, redness, dullness, and increased sensitivity. Add in dry indoor heating, cold outdoor air, alcohol, and disrupted sleep, and your barrier takes a real hit.

The antidote is simplicity. Strip your routine back to the essentials during high-stress periods: a gentle cleanser, a barrier-supporting moisturizer, and SPF. Don’t add new actives or try new products during the holidays — your skin is already under pressure. Our Reset Ritual is the perfect foundation for exactly this — a clean, complete three-step system that keeps skin calm and consistent.

2. Don’t abandon your ritual

Consistency is the most powerful skincare ingredient there is — and the holidays are when most people abandon it. Travel, late nights, and busy schedules make it tempting to skip steps. But your skin doesn’t take a holiday.

Simplify if you need to — but don’t stop. A three-step routine done every day will always outperform a ten-step routine done sporadically. Pack your essentials, keep them visible, and treat your morning and evening ritual as non-negotiable time for yourself.

3. Hydrate more than you think you need to

Holiday gatherings mean more alcohol, more caffeine, more salty food, and less water — all of which dehydrate the skin. Dehydrated skin looks dull, feels tight, and shows fine lines more prominently. The fix is simple: drink more water, and layer hydration into your skincare routine.

Our Hydration Ritual is built for exactly this — a layered approach that draws moisture into the skin and seals it there, leaving skin dewy and comfortable even through the driest, most demanding weeks of the year.

4. Protect your sleep

Skin repairs itself overnight. Late nights and disrupted sleep are one of the fastest ways to undo the work your skincare routine is doing. You don’t have to be rigid about it — but protecting even a few nights of quality sleep each week makes a visible difference. Wind-down rituals, limiting screens before bed, and your evening skincare routine as a signal to your nervous system that the day is done all help.

5. Give yourself permission to slow down

The holidays can carry emotional weight — grief, loneliness, family complexity, or simply the exhaustion of doing too much. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s what makes you able to show up for everyone else.

Your skincare ritual is a built-in moment of self-care. Use it intentionally — put your phone down, be present, and let it be a few minutes that belong entirely to you. That small act of consistency and self-respect compounds over time, in your skin and in how you feel.

6. Book a post-holiday reset facial

January is one of the best times to come in for a professional assessment. After the holidays, your skin tells a clear story — and a trained eye can see exactly what it needs to recover and reset. A facial at The Skincare Boutique in Ladera Ranch is a fully personalized experience, and it’s one of the most effective things you can do to start the new year with your skin on track.

Or if you want ongoing support through every season, the Boutique Society membership gives you one signature facial each month with me, plus member pricing on all products — so your skin is always being looked after, not just when things go wrong.
